On Friday, MJ Werthman White introduced her novel to the world. The sharp wit and astute observations of her poetry are now available in long form with characters you think about well after you close the book. It’s a party & you’re invited.

Now about your book. I started reading it and got about a third of the way in and it was getting late and i thought I would go to bed ... and then spent most of the night awake thinking about the characters in the book, what was happening, and anticipating what might happen next.
The next day I finished it, and then regretted reading it so quickly. I liked so many of the characters that I actually miss them now that the book is done. And then I spent another night awake thinking more about the book.
In other words, this is a fabulous read and I can't believe that I know the author.
I am also recommending it to all my reading friends and family.

Just got my copy a few days ago. I'm reading it slowly because I don't want it to end.

Well, I loved this book. I became friends with Garnet and looked forward to keeping up with her family and friends as I read. I find it is always sad to reach the end of a book that I enjoy, and that was true in this case. I wish for a “second season.” Thank you for inviting me into Garnet’s life.

This is a multi-generational story, richly layered, set in western New York state, with a side trip to Dayton. Also, dogs—especially Vera, the Great Pyrenees. The party of the title could have two meanings; the most obvious is Garnet’s 70th birthday. In addition to Garnet and her ex-husband, characters include her daughter, her siblings, a nephew and his precocious daughter, and all manner of romantic entanglements. Do yourself a favor and accept the invitation!

November was my favorite month, and I cherished the epilogue. Great job and I can't wait for your next book.

It’s a wonderful book, part poetry, part family novel, with a lot of gnarly rascals thrown in. You know, the typical family.

This beautifully crafted novel is a tribute to the American family in all its comic, tragic, misguided choices and to life itself. White has created a story that will make you laugh and touch your heart, leaving you in tears by the end of the story.

What an enjoyable novel! The characters really come to life, especially Garnet. I loved being immersed in her messy, comical, and ultimately lovable family’s story. MJ Werthman White addresses aging, love, break ups, and family relationships with thoughtfulness, grace and wit. Beautifully written and full of personality, AN INVITATION TO THE PARTY is an absolute delight!

An Invitation to the Party by MJ Werthman White, a book I would have greedily gobbled down in a day once upon a time. It's a lovely book, humane, gorgeously written, funny and sad. An altogether perfect little gem. You should read it. It won't take you nearly as long as it took me, but like me you'll be very glad you did.

Beautifully written and full of heart, An Invitation to the Party is a most enjoyable story where the blend of humor and tenderness keeps the reader's attention. It's a novel alive with desires and the complications of family life. I am fond of Garnet, and her wish that age would not render her invisible. She is very much alive and unforgettable to me.

From Erin Flanagan, 2022 Edgar-Award winning author of Deer Season (one terrific read itself!):
"MJ Werthman White’s delightful debut novel, An Invitation to the Party, feels like a house full of old friends with your favorite dog at your side. Written with a keen eye and in prose full of both old charm and new insights, these characters will live in your heart long after the last page."
